MacIntosh
Menus
Under commission to Matson, in
the 1930's, graphic artist Frank MacIntosh produced
these highly colorful and romantic scenes of
Hawai'i, capturing the spirit and romance of the
islands during this time period. They were also
produced for special events such as fashion shows
and other Hawaiian promotions, such as those for
Filene's department stores on the mainland. The
condition of a print is very important, with crisp,
bright images.

Savage
Menus
Eugene Savage (1883-1978) was
born in Covington, Indiana. In 1940, Savage
completed a two-year mural project for the Matson
Co. to be used as menu covers for the passenger
ship S.S. Lurline. He produced 4 x 8 foot murals
that went right into Matson's basement, never used
in the building or on the ships. The menus were
never used before World War Two, because, at the
outbreak of the war, Matson ships were
requisitioned as U.S. transport ships. The six menu
covers were finally used on the maiden voyage of
the refurbished "White Ship" Lurline in the year
1948.
The original menu set consisted
of nine images, three of which are rare and not
seen often. In 1950, the Printing for Commerce
exhibit of the American Institute of Graphic Arts
honored the menu covers with its highest award, and
in 1951 the menu designs were included in a display
of American lithographs at the Smithsonian
Institution. Due to the increased demand, Matson at
that time produced a set of six prints which could
be purchased from Matson Lines for a nominal
charge. It is estimated that over a quarter of a
million sets were printed as blanks or as actual
menus. Collectors should be aware that copies are
being made today of very good quality. Prices will
vary according to brightness of each image, fold
lines, foxing, etc. From 1948-1956, the Savage menu
designs were also produced on Aloha
attire.

Kelly Menus
Without a doubt, menus with
designs by John Kelly are the most collectable of
all covers, due to their ravishing depiction's of
Polynesians. These menu covers were produced in the
most part for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and in
limited numbers for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin as
Christmas presents in the early 1950's. John
Melville Kelly (1878 - 1962) born in Phoenix,
Arizona, came to Hawai'i in 1923 with his wife,
Katherine, a sculptor, for what they thought would
be a year. John began working with an advertising
company producing promotional materials. Prior to
this, he had spent fourteen years as a staff artist
for the San Francisco Examiner. His training was as
a master draftsman. He became enchanted with the
Hawaiian people, and was an early advocate of the
people and their rights. Well-known by these menu
covers, he also produced numerous etchings and
aquatints which are also highly sought after by
today's print collectors. It is without a doubt
that his favorite model, Marion, was the
inspiration for most of these menu covers. The
condition of a print is very important, with crisp
clean images commanding a higher price than those
that are foxed, etc. Star-Bulletin Christmas prints
in original wraps command a higher
price.
